Comments on the Mary Agnes story

Happy New Year everyone! After a great trip to the slopes of Fernie we're ready to dive into what could be the most exciting year for our party in many years.

We read this story and have a few observations.

FIRST of all, with the drama unfolding in Lord Roberts, Fort Garry and St. Norbert, how is it we lose a seat when we go from three ridings to three ridings? We have three strong female members here and they will each have a natural riding to run in. We do not agree with Mary Agnes Welch that Diane McGifford will be forced to retire. As champions of more women in the legislature, we fully expect and hope she will be a candidate in Fort Garry-Riverview next time around.

SECOND, we have to completely agree with Mary Agnes Welch that a suburban/south Winnipeg strategy is needed to win. She says "if the opposition is to form even a minority government in 2011, the Tories need to essentially sweep the city's suburbs."

We agree, and we also know who WON'T let that happen. If we are to go into the next election with a new leader, we can't afford to mess with a successful formula.

Because folks, let's get real, does anyone think that he, he, or she can win south Winnipeg or Winnipeg's suburbs? Some say that Theresa is not a progressive choice, but look at the risk we take by abandoning our winning formula. If you don't think Theresa's progressive enough, how would you feel about Premier McFayden?

As a student, I have to say that McGifford, who is one of those third way hacks, should have been forced into retirement a long time ago. All the NDP would lose is dead weight, and all students would lose is an enemy.

Diane McGifford has been a strong MLA and a strong minister. Her background in universities makes her a very qualified minister.

Her policies come from Doer, and the common sense approach of people like McGifford Doer and Oswald is the only way we can hang onto government.

Qualified? She's an English prof who doesn't know the definition of the words "extend" and "for the next four years", and she thinks campaign promises are "open to interpretation"

Her policies are to find loopholes in the tuition freeze to attack students. Now, I guess they're out of loopholes, so they need to get rid of it, even though most people support the tuition freeze.

Common sense, my ass! Raising tuition has more in common with Mike Harris' Common Sense Revolution than with actual common sense. Although given your praise for Blairite third way crap, I wouldn't be surprised if the CSR is what you want to bring to Manitoba.

And if these policies come from Doer, then she needs to take Doer with her.

Yeah, and George W. Bush hasn't lost an election since the 70s and has about the same approval rating as Tony Blair. Maybe the Manitoba NDP can get him as leader now that he's out of a job.
